What is Aspergillus Niger?

We know that BioClad antimicrobial cladding is effective on Aspergillus Niger, but what is it and what are the dangers of not treating it. Aspergillus Niger is a group of around 200 known fungi. The Aspergillus family has many practical applications in industry from fermentation to biomass energy. Other strains are known to be detrimental to humans. Aspergillus Niger is known to cause black mold and is found on most surfaces in varying quantities. It is found in highest density in soil and on organic material such as rotting leaves and it transferred in both airborne form and by hand. Exposure to Aspergillus can lead to a group of diseases collectively known as Aspergillosis. This can affect patients whose immune system may be compromised such as those with chronic granulomatous disease, leukaemia, cystic fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, severe asthmatic fungal sensitivity, HIV, AIDS, and chemotherapy and transplant patients.

What are the Symptoms of Aspergillosis?

Symptoms of Aspergillosis usually include respiratory difficulties or exacerbation of existing symptoms such as asthma. Infections can lead to fungi growing inside the lungs and sinuses causing chronic coughing, blocked sinuses and headaches. Infection has been known to spread through the blood stream to other organs such as the heart and cause fatalities, although this is rare.

Seeking to prevent the break out by minimising dampness and using antimicrobial building materials is key to reducing out breaks of Aspergillus. Regular cleaning using bleach based cleaners and appropriately disposing of waste where Aspergillus can grow should then minimise inevitable growth from airborne spores.
